Google Library

Google Scoops License to scan expired books : Google has announced that it will allow thirdparty retailers, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble, to sell copies of the out-of print books included in the Google Books Settlement.
It is an agreement between Google, the authors guild and the association of American publishers that would enable the search engine to scan millions of books online and license them for fees to readers. The authors and publishers would benefit by getting the money from the book sales and associated advertising.
A major point of contention against the settlement has been that it would give Google an effective monopoly on the millions of out-of-print books it scanned in as part of its Library Project, which are covered by the settlement.
Opponents say Google will get the monopoly because performing a similiar scanning project would be too expensive for any other party. To which Google has answered : Then clearly any de facto monopoly we might gain is not economically beneficial, because if there were profits to be made form out-of-print books, others would be diving in as well.
